8-Week Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction

What is Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Training?

There is a gap between knowing what to do and knowing how to do it. Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction provides a bridge for both. Developed more than three decades ago at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., Mindfulness Training helps a person live in the present moment and ride more easily the ups and downs of life. By intentionally bringing a non-judgmental awareness to breathing, body sensations, thoughts, and feelings--including fears, anger, frustrations, desires, and self doubts--a person is better equipped to deal with the challenges of life.

Who should participate?

The program is for those interested in self-development and learning ways to reduce day-to-day stress. You may join either by your own request or by a healthcare provider-referral. Some participants join the program with psychological or medical conditions (headaches, depression, chronic pain, heart disease, hypertension, gastrointestinal problems, anxiety and panic disorders, etc.). The program is complementary to traditional therapies.

What can be learned?

People simply observe what arises in the body and mind, perceiving each experience as an event in their own field of awareness. This fuller, moment to moment, non-judgmental awareness known as Mindfulness frees a person to make clearer and more attuned decisions.

The majority of people completing the program report lasting decreases in problematic physical and psychological symptoms. Most people also report an increased ability to relax, greater energy and enthusiasm for life, heightened self-confidence and an increased ability to cope more effectively with both short and long-term stressful situations.

Scientific research indicates that while not "curing" medical problems, conventional medical treatment outcomes have in many cases been greatly improved by MBSR as evidenced by reduced drug therapies and reduced progression of disease.

How long is the program?

The Mindfulness program takes place in 2˝ hour class-like sessions, once weekly for 8 consecutive weeks. There is also an individual pre-program interview and a single 7-Hour Saturday class meeting.

Using this mind/body approach regularly calls for a time investment of 45 minutes per day, 6 days a week throughout the duration of the program. The course consists of activities that cultivate the practice of living mindfully. This includes meditation, relaxation, easy stretching postures, class discussions and home supported exercises with CDs and workbook handouts.

Basic Mindfulness Class
A Class for Beginners and a way to re-start your practice.

Being mindful is a means of calming the mind by paying attention to your moment-to-moment experiences in a wholly non-judgmental manner. As you practice mindfulness, you learn to gather your inner resources in order to manage pain, illness and stress. This special form of attentiveness enables you to find new insights into life situations and, in turn, develop richer and more skillful responses to life’s events. Mindfulness encourages deep relaxation, heightened awareness and clarity of thought. You are doing something for yourself that no one else can do for you.

This class is designed for those new to meditation or those who would like a refresher. There will be simple instructions in the practice of mindfulness meditation. We will have discussions and you will be invited to ask questions. Come and learn to practice and add mindfulness to your life.

The full cost of the program including course materials is $275. A senior discount is available. Payment arrangements will be considered on an individual basis.

Classes Designed to Deepen Mindfulness

These 4 to 6-week classes are designed for beginners as well as those who have a regular meditation practice. The classes explore, with mindful investigation and understanding, how to work with reactive mind-states. Each class focuses on a particular topic, investigating ways to recognize the quality of being more present in the face of reactive habits and patterns where suffering is experienced. By knowing these reactive states, and how they can be changed, we are lead to being free of them.

Class topics may include:

  • Embracing thought distractions that remove us from the present moment.
  • Working with fear using mindful awareness of how fear projects its own realities.
  • Examining death and dying with compassion while exploring stages of self-preservation.
  • Working with anger and the cultivation of patience and compassion.
  • Contact Dr. Blumenfeld for other class topics.

* Space is limited to preserve an intimate atmosphere. To register or for more information, please use the Contact Page.
